7/7 Class Reflection - Robyn

In class on Thursday, I very much enjoyed getting to talk with a new small group! It was nice to hear some new voices in discussion.

In our group, we talked a lot about Freire and his idea that the oppressed aim to imitate and follow their oppressors. Thinking about today’s society, this seems almost hard not to do because white is often portrayed as ideal. This idea is represented in many facets of society, especially in terms of the media. How can we in our classrooms assist in breaking this thought that one certain way of looking or behaving is ideal when these ideas are so ingrained?

Also, Ryan pointed out that in the Fanon article, he often uses words/phrases related to the medical field/biology, such as “symptomatology”, “racism bloats and disfigures the face of the culture”, “sclerosed” to speak about racism. This is something I definitely did not pick up on in the slightest while I was reading. Although it seems to make sense that Fanon would use terms like this because of his medical/psychiatry background, it seems to make racism more raw in my mind. It’s portrayed almost disease-like, which I think approaches the problem from an interesting viewpoint.
