7/7 Class Reflection (Fanon & Freire) - Kevin Dua

Within our new breakout group, we analyzed the ramificiations of racism embedded in our society, as Fanon classified racism as a "cultural element." A question I posed was when exactly does race become a distinguish factor among children when comparing each other's intelligence abilities among coursework. Young children are often discouraged of their own intellectual potential when their peers perform exceptionally well within the classroom over them, citing irrelevant factors. However, it was brought up in discussion that as students age, physical factors (i.e. gender, race, class) play a significant factor in discriminating between each other in regards to competition (reaffirmed by outside environmental and societal influences).

When such differences are recognized, children (or people in general) who were once oppressed become the oppressor over those "inferior" (based off their own perspective) to them. This imitation of their oppressor (by the oppressive group) is often used in order to survive/enforce misplaced resentment towards another person and/group (i.e. racial/ethnic school cliches who segregate among others to exist in and out of the classroom).
