C.Aloe- 7/12 Reflection

When discussing issues pertaining to ELLs and bilingual education, it is important to remember how everyone has a unique perspective. These issues are political in nature, as are all educational policies, but too often fear (and prejudice as we discussed in class) set a tone of intolerance. With that said, Mr. Larievy offered a historical analysis of how language has developed in the United States. The progression of bilingual education and the limitations of bilingual education are controversial topics, and our cohort certainly reflected that in our class-wide conversations. Ultimately, I think that teachers have an obligation to be well-versed in the issues facing ELLs, their families, and non-ELLs. Regardless of individual preferences for or against enacting bilingual education programs, it is an issue that will remain central to the changing demographics within the United States.
