High School Model Algebra I - Curriculum Assignment (dana)

The MA Curriculum Framework provides a level of expectation for students in grade 9; however, it makes some assumptions. The major assumption is that a student in the 9th grade has already mastered all the fundamental skills from K-8. It does not take into consideration for students that "coasted" through classes and those that barely passed each level. The Framework should emphasize the importance of reviewing previous levels - each lesson should springboard from the previous lesson.

I would modify the curriculum so that the idea of "review" is incorporated in each lesson and repetitive practice is used. For example, I would create 'Do Now's' that will allow a student to answer an easy question (assumed knowledge content); then a normal question (current material); and lastly a hard question (a challenge question to encourage students to think and to have a growth mindset). Then throughout the lesson, I would emphasize the importance of practicing problems and provide similar examples. Then I would throw in harder/different problems towards the end after the student has built up confidence.
