After discussing it during the Donovan Brazilian Lunch escapade, followed by the class discussion - with the much-appreciated new groupings...no offense to my old group - I feel as though I was able to grasp - if even just a little bit - the Fanon article. On my own I had struggled mightily with the reading and seemingly wrote more question marks than comments.
However, I believe that what allowed me to better understand some of the verbose ideas in the Fanon article was my groups connection of the text with our other readings and communally discussed ideas. For instance on page 174 where he writes '...enslavement...of the native population is the prime necessity," followed by "...systems of reference have to be broken. Expropriation, spoliation, raids..." our group was able to connect Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed and the re-humanization of both the oppressed and the oppressor in order to make sense of the concepts being presented.
There were many other cross-referenced ideas that could have been explained in conjunction with Woodson or Delpit as well. Thus, moving forward I hope to engage classmates/cohort members/friends ;) before the class so as to come to class ready to not just work to understand the readings, but to build from them and to find ways in which to utilize the large societal ideas as a future educator.
