7/12 Class Reflection

Mr. Larievy did a great job presenting the large topic of teaching English Language Learners in a very reasonable and approachable manner. As someone who has limited engagement with ELL, I felt that I could - if even vaguely - understand what types of programs are out there and how they foster the students development of multiple languages. I had never seen the Two Way Bilingual programs, so I am glad that we got to watch the 'Speaking in Tongues' video so as to get an introduction to the pros and cons of such an approach at teaching and learning.

I also very much enjoyed the discussion - though I think I sat at the wrong table - of today's readings and once again was able to better understand some confusing ideas/concepts with the help of the group. My group made multiple connections of all three readings, as well as with Mr. Larievy's lecture, in order to build on our knowledge base - no matter how small - of working successfully with ELL students.

I brought up, and still have questions about, the idea of respecting the parent/guardian's desire for their child to learn only English in school. After today's class I have a better idea of why it is more worthwhile to show respect and appreciation for the student's home language in order to add English as a second, but I am still wondering how the conversation with non-English speaking parents/guardians would go if their desire is for the child to learn standard English...Thoughts or experiences anyone?
