I enjoyed the contributions of our guest lecturer, Mr. Larievy. He expressed a great deal of zeal to working with ELL students. His personal stories and historical insights brought the topic to a more personal level which added greatly to the overall class. I thought the sections of the film we watched in class, Speaking in Tongues, were very intriguing and I hope to see the film in its entirety in the future. The concept of bilingual education in schools like those in San Francisco would be incredibly beneficial to students in this country. If our students want to compete in the global markets, learning and understanding a second language is critical to this country’s future successes. I also loved seeing ELL students being able to hold onto their first language through bilingual education- it connects them to their familial histories and cultures which is important to one’s identity.
