Mr. Laravie’s discussion caught me off guard in a good way. I did not expect his job to be so intensely personal. It was great to see his conviction. His statistic, 7-10 years for a person to gain academic fluency, put my job as an elementary teacher into perspective. After all, most ELL students that enter my classroom will fall within the period. They will also be dealing with the bullying and other uncertainties that often accompany the development of language learners. Protecting these learners and helping them gain the confidence to speak many languages will be more important than my instruction.
