So obviously I should be doing some readings right now, but my brother just showed me a youtube video that is sadly not uncommon to find. The video is called "I hate Black History Month." What I think bothers me more than the girl in the video is the response other people write congratulating and agreeing with the "non-racist because she's jewish" girl. If you watch some of the response videos, the people who comment on them are also extremely hostile and sometimes make overt racial comments. One person, in response to the idea of African Americans overcoming oppression and racism, stated:
"yeah right. try being poor, white, and single with no kids. I got no help with school. While all these other people got all this help and special clubs based on race. We are on our own. Best of luck to everyone but I see the real racism on me today as far as laws and social services are concerned. I starved for many years because of racism against whites and the lower middle class.
In the original video, the girl talks about how whites are decreasing in numbers while minorities are increasing and this reminded me of a conversation I once had with a friend. During lunch she proceeded to tell me that "we need to start having more kids because all of the minorities are having so many kids. If we don't have more than two kids we will be the minority." I was in so much shock by that comment, and some others, that I literally didn't even respond, I didn't know how to begin. First of all, I was confused as to why she was referring to ME in her statement and shocked that she would even say, or think this. Granted I should have seen it coming since the day before she told me that she was all for the Arizona immigration law. When I challenged her and said it was based off stereotypes and wrong, she assured me that she "would also stop a bunch of Asians and ask for their papers too," so clearly its not just against Mexicans... Well, those two conversations pretty much stopped the friendship.
I think what really fascinates me about young people having such "ancient" viewpoints on diversity and racism is that I thought we all grew up in this "new world." I expect to face tough battles with adults, but it blows my mind when I face people my age OR younger who have such limited perceptions.
....
Also, if you are curious about your chance of "beating the odds" and having the "perfect two toned family:"
Feel free to view the videos yourself, I just wanted to share! Night
I think it's interesting to note how she periodically realizes what she's saying might not actually be the best possible scenario (changes in inflection and body language).
Piggy-backing off our last Donovan Seminar, someone should have asked her what it means to be "white" -- outside of being "dominant" and "America(n)," that is.
