Bilingualism

I though today's class was great! I had absolutely no idea that America was so accepting towards various languages being spoken throughout different regions of the country. It's a shame that Teddy Roosevelt said that speech and we let prejudice and politics hurt our education system. It's also a shame that other nations appreciate bilingualism but we disdain it. I think it can help make our kids more well rounded and it will better help them serve their surrounding communities.

However, I was encouraged to see that there are schools and states that are still promoting bilingualism. It was refreshing to see the the test scores of students in Houston that showed how students who took classes in their native tongue and in English fared way better on their assessments. Hopefully it will encourage their parents to push them to hold on to their culture. The result are clear as day. But the truth is sometimes the kids receive mixed messages about assimilation into mainstream American culture. It's essential that we help our students feel comfortable in their shoes and encourage them to appreciate their native culture.
