Research Curriculum (Secondary History)
For my curriculum research I was looking at the Regents Curriculum for History (World 9th/10th) and US History (11th/12th) in New York State. For World History, different world empires such as the Babylonians (Mesopotamia), the Greeks and Romans are covered. Additionally, religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam are also covered. I would definitely incorporate technology for these units so that I can "take my students around the world" without having to literally do it. I can take advantage of powerpoint and videos to give students an idea of how people in different parts of the world live. In US History, the history of American is traced right down the timeline from the pre Revolutionary war. I definitely would have room to maneuver in the curriculum as I even remembered my teachers doing so when I took these classes. one way I would make the information relevant to my students is by showing them (through pics, music, images) what was going on around other parts of the World and here in Black America during this time. I would have a map with dates and flags of key events that took place in the World (and I would not leave out "3rd World History". I can also highlight the independence of different countries on the day of their independence. In World History, there will be a lot of room to maneuver for diversifying the curriculum. Hence, I will already be dealing with various world cultures. I will also expose students to the lifestyles of people in the present day countries of the empires and religions we are studying. Hopefully this will broaden their views and help make them more open minded to diversity.
