I faciliated the group discussion on 7/12 on our readings from Kaplan, Dowdy and Baker.
Here are the questions that were discussed:
Kaplan
1. When Kaplan shows the graphical representations of the various paragraphs, did you get offended? Was it right/wrong to assume that English was the "accepted" way to structure the paragraphs?
2. Since culture has a huge impact on the way a person writes, how could one person be "taught" the correct way? Which is the correct/proper way?
3. Does Kaplan have low standards or is he being realistic (pointing to his last paragraph on page 220)? Does he not think it's possible to be challenged or is it really reviewing our thought process only?
Dowdy
4. As you read through Dowdy, were there any moments where you could relate to her from your past experiences?
5. What are your thoughts on Dowdy learning/imitating British English? How is this different from students who want to lose their accents? Is this the same thing?
Baker
6. It seems like stereotypes are formed to give a sense of security - do you agree or disagree?
7. What happens if someone doesn't experience all three forms of the English language ("home", "formal" and "professional")?
