Thoughts from 7/14 (dana)

It was very interesting when Professor Grandson said he used the "oh, here we go agian'' comment in his class. That was the exact same thought I had throughout the class - 'here we go again...'

As I've been sitting through both Donovan classes, I'm realizing the challenge that is ahead of us... to deal with the repetitive conversations about racism, classism and the systemic injustice that seems hopeless. Even while watching "The Common School", I kept asking, what has changed since the 1700 and 1800? I have to keep reminding myself that there has been changes and things are only getting better (even thought it took FOREVER). I have to believe that every person's fight was not in vain. When Zina asked our class 'what type of systems do we need to have in our classroom', I think we all knew the "right" answers - give studetns a voice, challenge them, gain and give respect/control, etc. However, the real question is how? How do we REALLY do that? How do we stand up against prinicples that have been around for centuries? And I question this even more as a Korean - someone without a "powerful" voice. How can I step into a classroom and be THAT voice?

I walked out of class feeling sad ... yet eager. I'm eager to face the challenges that'll come my way. However, I know that I'm meant to learn everything that I am right now so that it could be used for the near future. So my hope is to continue to keep my ears/eyes opened and to relearn or unlearn everything that I thought was "right".
