I appreciated learning a little about the history of the public school in the U.S. It is interesting that inequities were inherent in the system from the get go, but that the system can be somewhat reformed by individuals. I couldn't say if it was harder to enact reform then as opposed to now, but as Kevin and Professor Grandson said, we must apply the knowledge we are gaining now, in class, to the real world, in order for it to really mean anything.
I was glad that we did Zina's activity. Taking many steps forward and only a couple back threw things into perspective for me. I'm thankful that my family has given me so much and I've led a fairly stable life, but it is of the utmost importance to realize that most people have not had things fall into their lap that way. The staggering of our line affirmed to me the importance of not only teaching content, but being a mentor to our children. Simply listening with them will go a long way I think.
