7/21 Class Reflection (Roma)

I really enjoyed Brie's presentation.

Brie, thank you so much for preparing a thoughtful and very enlightening presentation!

Bourdieu is one of the greatest driving force to my current beliefs about education. I believe that his theory of power and practice, and forms of capital, which explicates the multi-directional relationships between economic, social and cultural experiences are so on point, and should be given more attention in the field of education. As teachers, it is important that we are aware of the many possible barriers that our students may be dealing with. We have had many discussions about whether teachers are also social workers. Bourdieu's theory definitely portrays the challenges that we, as urban teachers will encounter and must confront. We are teachers, but we are much more than just a title. As teachers, we must prepare ourselves to also play the roles of a social worker, of a parent, of a caregiver, of a counselor, of a mentor, and of many other titles.
