I thought the conversation about what should be deemed as proper dress code for students was interesting. I loved hearing everyone’s passionate responses to the conversation. I would agree that students need to understand the value of code switching- that there are appropriate ways to express their individuality without compromising their position in a wider social context. Schools and teachers do have a responsibility to students to not just provide them with academic merits for their future achievements, but also to provide practical skills and knowledge for social competence when they seek success in the dominant society. Clothing and apparel should not be distracting students from focusing on their work. I like the statement that was made about respecting others and receiving respect yourself.
