Kono Tuesday July 19th Reflection

I was amazed by the passion that Dr. Narcisse brought to our discussion yesterday. I think that the issues he raised are important for all of us to think about both in our studies over the next year and in the classrooms in which we will teach. One of the ideas/aspects of our class that was most significant was the connection between the "Do Now" activity at the beginning of class and Dr. Narcisse's dicussion on class vs. race in the context of rural, suburban and urban school settings. The caste system that pervades American culture and society definitely makes sense as a reason for discrepancies in our school systems. I believe that the intersections of race and class are those that need our most attention and energy. In the words of Dr. Narcisse, we must "be relentless." Futhermore, I was fascinated by our discussion on the influence of money on the individual. While we have seen that it manifests itself in power and influence, Dr. Narcisse's argument that it is also a facade makes sense when we think and talk about the liberation of the oppressors by the oppressed.
