Michelle, 7/19 class reflection

I was really impressed that Dr. Sito Narcisse's has been in 38 states for teaching and restructuring schools inside and out--a job, by the list of his credentials and self assertion, he does not want to do forever. He's in the moment, doing what he does best and doing it well.

His key points I pulled from the lecture:
  • "Be relentless."Those are simple yet such strong words. We all could see Dr. Sito's confidence and success are nothing short of that.
  • "Learned helplessness theory: believing you can't change, you will fail." I believe this applies not only to students, but teachers as well. You have to be relentless and believe you will succeed--to see yourself at the finish line rather than falling behind.
  • "Know thy self." It's not an easy process, but as Dr. Sito pointed out, it's crucial for us know who we are, what we stand for and any biases we may have. Because with our knowing looking into this, we can be further dividing ourselves from our students and their communities.
Lastly, throwing our statistics from the Census, prison populations and medical schools helped us visualize the current situation of things. I've done this at my high school when I go and visit to speak to them about college and their future plans. This is a school that is roughtly 70% Latino--I read and show them statistics on number of Latinos going to 4-year institutions, how many Latinas there are in higher education, how quickly our population is growing--pulling stats that they can relate to, always following with, how are you going to change those numbers?
